Remote health facilities across Vanuatu are now safer, brighter and better equipped, with Respond Global’s HELPR-1 team completing all planned solar installations under the Australian Government-funded REnew Pacific program in record time.

Delivered in partnership with Vanuatu’s National Green Energy Fund, the project installed 20 new off-grid solar systems and refurbished 20 more across all six provinces. The final installation took place at Mamalu Vanua Dispensary in Naviso, which had previously never had proper electrification.

The completion marks a major milestone for REnew Pacific, with HELPR-1 becoming the program’s first project to reach full completion since launching in March 2025. It brings reliable solar power to some of Vanuatu’s most remote clinics and hospitals, improving healthcare for more than 80,000 people.

Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Max Willis, said HELPR-1’s completion is an early Christmas present for remote communities across the country.

“As one of the first REnew Pacific projects to start and the first to finish, HELPR-1 shows the strength of the Vanuatu-Australia partnership and what we can achieve together.

“Australia is pleased to support Vanuatu in powering its health facilities with clean, dependable solar energy. These systems strengthen the resilience of local services, ensure vital equipment can operate when needed and help communities overcome the challenges of distance and isolation. This is practical, life-changing infrastructure that will benefit Vanuatu for many years.”

The HELPR-1 project delivered upgrades tailored to each facility’s needs, including energy-efficient lighting, battery systems, water pumps and priority medical equipment. Facilities such as Quatvaes Hospital and Saramauri Health Centre can now operate x-ray machines, ultrasounds and other diagnostic tools for the first time thanks to clean, reliable solar power. Local health and facility staff were also trained to operate and maintain the new systems, ensuring long-term reliability and strengthening capacity across remote islands.

Dr Basil Leodoro, Director of HELPR-1 Operations at Respond Global, said completing the installations is a milestone for community health nationwide. “When the power is stable, care is safer. With the Ministry of Health, the National Green Energy Fund and Australia’s REnew Pacific program beside us, we have been able to overcome significant logistical challenges and bring consistent, renewable power to facilities that serve some of the most remote islands in the country. This work means more emergencies handled on site, safer deliveries for mothers and babies and greater confidence for our health workers every day.”

REnew Pacific is the Australian Government’s $75 million commitment to expanding clean, reliable off-grid renewable energy in rural and remote Pacific and Timor-Leste communities. It is part of the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative focused on climate infrastructure in the region, delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

Vanuatu’s northernmost province has reached a major healthcare milestone, with Torba’s first-ever x-ray service now operational at Quatvaes Hospital, powered by clean energy through the Australian Government-funded REnew Pacific program.

Delivered through Respond Global’s HELPR-1 project with Vanuatu’s National Green Energy Fund, the new solar and battery system provides Quatvaes Hospital with reliable, renewable power to operate essential medical equipment and improve access to care across the province.

Serving more than 11,000 people across Torba’s islands, Quatvaes Hospital is now equipped with an x-ray machine, ultrasound and other critical diagnostic tools for the first time. Nearby Bemiasas Health Centre on Mota Lava has also been upgraded with new solar power and essential equipment, strengthening healthcare across Torba’s remote communities.

Minister of Health, John Still Tari Qetu, Minister of Climate Change, Ralph Regenvanu, Member of Parliament (MP) Jean Jacques Ngwele and Torba MPs Danny Silas and John Joseph attended events at both health facilities to celebrate the achievement, together with President of TORBA Province Edgar Howard, Secretary General (SG) of TORBA Province Albert Ruddley and Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Max Willis.

“Today is a milestone for Torba,” said Health Minister Qetu. “With the province’s first x-ray machine and reliable solar power at Quatvaes Hospital and Bemisas Health Centre, our clinicians can diagnose and treat patients faster and closer to home. The Torba community can also feel assured that they can access essential services whenever they need them, night and day.”

The solar installation at Quatvaes is the largest delivered under REnew Pacific so far and comes with the gifting of priority medical equipment, including the x-ray machine, an ultrasound, an ECG machine, an oxygen concentrator and other vital medical equipment endorsed by the Ministry of Health. Nearby Bemiasas Health Centre also received essential upgrades, with new solar power and equipment such as a blood pressure monitor with AC adapter, pulse oximeter, diagnostic set, foetal Doppler, examination light, portable fan, surge-protected powerboard and a battery recharge kit.

Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Max Willis, said: “X-ray services are now live at Quatvaes Hospital, with dependable solar power keeping the lights on. This investment in solar-powered infrastructure and modern diagnostic equipment is a powerful example of our enduring partnership with Vanuatu. It means mothers can give birth safely, illness and injury can be diagnosed locally and health workers can access the tools they need to save lives. Australia is proud to have partnered with the Government of Vanuatu, the Ministry of Health, the National Green Energy Fund, and Respond Global through HELPR-1 to deliver this life changing project. Australia is committed to helping build resilient communities where everyone has access to quality sustainable healthcare.”

Delivered in partnership with Vanuatu’s National Green Energy Fund through Australia’s REnew Pacific, HELPR-1 is working to install 20 new off-grid solar systems and refurbish 20 more across all six provinces. The team has now reached its 30th completion, putting the team at 75% of the way to its goal of reaching more than 80,000 people in remote communities with cleaner energy, safer water and better healthcare.

Dr Basil Leodoro, Director of HELPR-1 Operations at Respond Global, said: “When the power is stable, care is safer. With Australia’s backing and strong partnership from the Ministry of Health and Department of Energy, this REnew Pacific effort means we can run x-rays, keep medicines cold and treat emergencies after dark: things our patients in remote islands should always be able to count on.”

REnew Pacific is the Australian Government’s $75 million commitment to expanding clean, reliable off-grid renewable energy in rural and remote Pacific and Timor-Leste communities. Over the next five years, the program will fund locally-led projects that improve lighting, water, healthcare, education, agriculture and resilient livelihoods.

It’s made possible through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), an AUD $350 million initiative delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

From the highlands of Papua New Guinea to the outer islands of Kiribati, the Pacific is a region defined by its vast ocean, strong communities and deep connection to nature.

For generations, our Blue Pacific family has lived in harmony with the sea. But today, that ocean is rising. Climate change is the single greatest threat to our shared home, reshaping lives, livelihoods and ecosystems across the region.

Australia and the Pacific stand together to protect our shared home and future. Through Australian Government partnerships under REnew Pacific and its earlier Business Partnerships Platform (BPP) pilots, local communities, governments and businesses are building climate resilience, powering health centres, schools, water systems and livelihoods in some of the region’s most remote off-grid communities with clean, renewable energy.

Since the first BPP pilots in 2024 to now – just two weeks out from celebrating REnew Pacific’s one-year anniversary – 19 remarkable projects have been transforming lives across our region’s most remote off-grid communities.

Together, they are delivering clean, reliable energy to more than 130 schools, health centres and communities across six Pacific and Timor-Leste countries, reaching over 230,000 people – and we have only just begun.

As COP30 in Belém fast approaches, we are celebrating the partnerships powering climate leadership across our vast region, uniting Australia and our Pacific family in shared purpose and progress.

In Vanuatu, ActionAid Australia, ActionAid Vanuatu, the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta (WITTT) Network and PowerWells are strengthening women’s control and access to clean, affordable energy. The University of New South Wales, working with the Vanuatu Disability Promotion and Advocacy Association, the Vanuatu Institute of Technology and the Vanuatu Department of Energy, is addressing solar e-waste through a circular economy approach that builds local skills and sustainable solutions. Respond Global, in partnership with the Vanuatu National Green Energy Fund (NGEF), is improving healthcare delivery in remote areas through off-grid renewable energy and training for local technicians. The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), also working with NGEF, is supporting solar-powered water systems that strengthen community resilience and create green jobs across the islands.

In Kiribati, Action on Poverty and the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific are empowering local women to expand access to clean energy and safe water, improving health, safety and livelihoods across remote island communities.

In Papua New Guinea, KTF (Kokoda Track Foundation) is expanding its successful pilot under the BPP, which powered Kokoda College with clean energy and digital learning infrastructure. Through REnew Pacific’s first PNG project, KTF will now be delivering new solar mini-grids to remote communities in Oro and Central Provinces, powering classrooms, digital learning and health services at Mt Koiari FODE Centre and the Sanananda Aid Post. Their work will improve access to education and healthcare in some of Papua New Guinea’s most remote off-grid areas. Caritas Australia and Catholic Church Health Services are improving energy access for essential healthcare in New Ireland Province, ensuring clinics can deliver life-saving care safely and reliably. Sola PayGo, in partnership with MiBank, is creating jobs and livelihoods through renewable energy.

In the Solomon Islands, Superfly is leading a new REnew Pacific project to install solar hybrid systems at Atoifi Adventist Hospital, Goldie College and Sir Dudley Tuti College, delivering reliable clean power for healthcare and education across Malaita, Western and Isabel provinces. Superfly has also strengthened energy security at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Tetere and has partnered with Save the Children Solomon Islands and the Mai-Ma’asina Green Belt to expand solar access in Malaita communities. Archipelago Energy is securing renewable power on Savo Island, while Pelena is powering the Vavanga community with micro-hydro.

In Fiji, Its Time Foundation is powering classrooms and computer labs in remote schools, while the GGGI is delivering hybrid energy systems that strengthen water access and community resilience across maritime islands.

And in Timor-Leste, Engineers Without Borders Australia, Raw Material and Mara Mresa are catalysing renewable energy for coffee cooperatives in off-grid communities, while MEA Power Up and Master Electricians Australia are improving health infrastructure in Cova-Lima Province with new solar systems at clinics and water pumping sites.

Each project tells a story of partnership, resilience and shared purpose, with communities powering a sustainable and inclusive future for our Blue Pacific. All are made possible through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

Follow along as we get ever closer to COP30 on the road to Belém.

A single classroom light might seem small, but for students across the Pacific and Timor-Leste, it’s the start of something extraordinary. It means the chance to study after dark, connect to the internet for the first time and step into a world of new possibilities. Each light switched on is more than a moment of progress, it’s a foundation for generational change. The student who logs on for the first time today could become the engineer who designs the next renewable innovation, the doctor who saves lives or the scientist who cures cancer.

With just three weeks until #COP30, we’re spotlighting education, because powering classrooms with clean energy is powering opportunity. Supported by the Australian Government through REnew Pacific and earlier pilots under the Business Partnerships Platform, local partners are lighting up schools and learning spaces with renewable energy across the Pacific.

In Fiji, Its Time Foundation, in partnership with Fiji’s Ministry of Education and the Australian Government, is expanding access to clean energy for 30 remote and maritime schools through REnew Pacific. Each site will receive reliable 24-hour solar power, high-speed internet and simple computer labs, helping bridge the digital divide and improve learning conditions for students and teachers.

The new project builds on a successful pilot at Buakonikai Primary School on Rabi Island, where clean, reliable solar power and internet connectivity have transformed the learning environment for 115 students. Teachers now report higher engagement, new opportunities for digital lessons and annual savings of more than AUD 6,000 in fuel costs, reinvested in classroom improvements. Find out more and watch a short film about the pilot’s impact here and below:

In Solomon Islands, Superfly is installing solar hybrid systems at Goldie College and Sir Dudley Tuti College. Around-the-clock electricity will enable longer study hours, safer dormitories and better access to digital learning for more than 1,400 students and teachers. Find out more.

In Papua New Guinea, over 200 students at Kokoda College now have access to reliable, renewable power through a new solar mini-grid. Delivered by the Kokoda Track Foundation and the Australian Government through a #DFATBPP pilot that was completed in March, the system powers classrooms, an IT lab, water and waste facilities, as well as supporting climate-smart agriculture on campus. Find out more.

And in Vanuatu, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is working with local partners to bring solar power and clean water to schools and health centres across Santo, Paama, Tanna and Malekula islands. By training community members in system maintenance and governance, the project is creating local jobs and building long-term energy resilience for 4,700 people. Find out more.

Every classroom lit by solar tells a story of possibility, of girls studying safely at night, of teachers using technology to open new worlds and of communities reinvesting savings back into education. As we move closer to COP30, these projects remind us that climate action is also about equity and opportunity. Clean, reliable energy is lighting up futures: one school, one student and one community at a time.

These transformative education projects are made possible through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

It was late afternoon when Mary* arrived at the Yonanen Dispensary, a local health clinic on Vanuatu’s remote Tanna Island, heavily pregnant with her first child. The dispensary had been without lighting for over a decade. Night was falling, and like many women before her, she faced the prospect of giving birth by torchlight.

Just a week earlier, Respond Global’s HELPR-1 vessel had repaired and refurbished the existing solar power system at the clinic. Thanks to clean, 24/7 energy, the nurse was able to support Mary deliver and her baby boy safely and with dignity, during a time when they were both at their most vulnerable.

This is one of many stories the HELPR-1 team encounter on their life-changing mission to install 20 new solar systems and upgrade another 20 health facilities across Vanuatu. With support from the Vanuatu National Green Energy Fund (NGEF) and REnew Pacific, the team is also supplying medical equipment, repairing schools and clinics, training community members, and safely removing e-waste. Now more than halfway through, the project is on course to deliver reliable power to health centres that tens of thousands of local people depend on in some of Vanuatu’s most remote communities. Find out more.

As we hit the halfway mark in our countdown to COP30, we are focusing on a matter close to us all: the right to safe, reliable healthcare, powered by clean energy. Supported by the Australian Government through REnew Pacific and earlier pilots under the Business Partnerships Platform, local partners are lighting up health centres with clean, renewable energy across the region.

In Papua New Guinea, Caritas Australia has been working with Catholic Church Health Services, TAG Energy, Bechtel.org and the Australian Government to bring solar power to Lavongai and Mapua health facilities in New Ireland Province, improving care for the 12,000 people they serve. Find out more.

In Timor-Leste’s Cova-Lima Province, the MEA Power Up partnership with Master Electricians Australia and the Australian Government has improved services at clinics in Gala and Holpilat. With new solar systems, batteries and water pumps, these facilities now provide safer conditions for patients and health workers, while work continues to extend upgrades to other sites. Find out more.

In Solomon Islands, more than 43,000 people depend on the Good Samaritan Hospital (pictured) in Tetere, Guadalcanal, including 21,500 women who rely on it for maternity and child health care. Through a partnership with Superfly, completed late last year, the hospital now meets 97.3% of its energy needs with solar. This reliable, round-the-clock power has enabled safer night-time care and generated savings from 19,000 litres of avoided diesel use, reinvested into new facilities including expanded foot care services and a soon-to-open eye clinic. Find out more.

Further east in Malaita Province, Superfly is also leading upgrades at Atoifi Adventist Hospital through REnew Pacific. The hospital serves more than 80,000 people but has long struggled with blackouts that interrupted emergency care, maternity services and vaccine refrigeration. A new solar hybrid system will soon provide 24/7 reliable electricity, transforming the hospital’s ability to deliver essential care. “With 24-hour solar power, we can deliver safer surgeries, consistent vaccines and uninterrupted maternity care. This project is a life-saving investment for the people we serve,” said Lester Asugeni, Community Representative on the Atoifi Hospital Board. Find out more.

Every solar installation is a promise of safer care: a baby delivered under steady light, vaccines preserved, health workers able to use essential equipment without fear of power cuts, and so much more. Across the Pacific and Timor-Leste, these projects are ensuring that reliable energy means reliable healthcare, so that community members – no matter where they live – can receive the care they need at life’s most critical moments.

These transformative healthcare projects are made possible through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

Women are powering the clean energy transition in the Pacific and Timor-Leste. Their leadership as engineers, electricians, entrepreneurs and community organisers is transforming daily life and strengthening climate resilience in some of the region’s most remote communities.

With just six weeks to go in our countdown to #COP30, we’re sharing stories that highlight how women’s leadership is creating new opportunities, strengthening communities and shaping a more inclusive clean energy future across the Pacific and beyond. These stories come from projects supported by the Australian Government through REnew Pacific and earlier pilots under the Business Partnerships Platform (BPP) Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnerships.

In Fiji, licensed electrician, Vasiti Talakubu, is helping roll out off-grid solar systems in schools, working on the recently announced REnew Pacific partnership with Its Time Foundation and its earlier BPP pilot. Classrooms that once relied on torchlight or kerosene lamps now have safe and reliable power. Known affectionately as “Solar,” Vasiti also runs her own business and mentors young women to pursue careers in STEM. She is breaking barriers in a male-dominated field and showing communities that women can lead the way in technical roles. Read her story here.

In Timor-Leste, Felisbela Pires, a local engineer, is leading a partnership with Engineers Without Borders Australia, Raw Material and Mara Mresa to replace costly diesel generators with solar to power coffee processing hubs. The systems are improving bean quality, opening higher-value markets and providing additional energy for refrigeration, fabrication and connectivity beyond the coffee season. Felisbela is also mentoring 12 young Timorese women engineers, building the next generation of leaders. Read her story here.

In Kiribati, Michiyo Yamada, is championing inclusive approaches to clean energy through her role at Action on Poverty. On Aranuka Island, she has helped lead a partnership with the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific Kiribati and PowerTech Energy to deliver solar-powered water pumps and electricity to schools and community houses. By embedding a strong gender lens in the project, Michiyo is ensuring women benefit directly from energy access while stepping into leadership roles that strengthen community resilience. Read her story here.

In Vanuatu, Laylyn Toa, is managing the Fixim Sola initiative made possible through a BPP partnership with UNSW. The program is building skills for solar repair and maintenance across the islands, with women stepping into hands-on technical roles and proving they can excel in the energy sector as small business owners. Laylyn’s leadership is helping create pathways for more women to take up technical careers in renewable energy. Find out more about the project here.

In Papua New Guinea, Esther Wartovo, is helping families in Bialla access affordable solar through her dual role as a MiBank and Sola PayGo agent. She supports households to finance systems, educates customers on their use and helps small businesses extend their working hours. Her work is opening doors for women in energy and strengthening community services. Find out more about the project here.

The BPP recently launched the Women in Power series, celebrating these remarkable leaders. In the weeks ahead, readers will hear more from Laylyn, Esther and others as they share their journeys and the incredible impact in their local communities they are making. Stay tuned!

These stories of women powering change come from partnerships delivered through the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350million initiative for climate infrastructure in the region delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

REnew Pacific’s Respond Global project has reached the halfway mark in its mission to power up remote healthcare facilities across Vanuatu, switching on clean energy and water systems at five health facilities in Sanma Province. The upgrades, completed last month, are improving care for the 11,700 people the facilities serve.

The HELPR-1 team completed a challenging month-long deployment in August to electrify and refurbish some of the province’s most remote health centres. New off-grid solar systems were installed at Saramauri Health Centre, Vulesepe Dispensary and Pessena Dispensary, while essential refurbishments restored and extended existing systems at Stonehill and Tasiriki Dispensaries.

The work went beyond energy. Repairs to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities were carried out at every site, and Saramauri Health Centre received its first consignment of modern medical equipment, including a patient monitor, oxygen concentrator, defibrillator, autoclave and foetal doppler, giving staff the tools they need to deliver better care.

Two students from the Vanuatu Institute of Technology joined the mission, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to the next generation of Vanuatu’s clean energy workforce.

Delivered in partnership with Vanuatu’s National Green Energy Fund through REnew Pacific, the HELPR-1 Climate Adaptation Program is working to install 20 new off-grid solar systems and refurbish 20 more across all six provinces. With Sanma now online, the program is halfway to its goal of benefitting over 80,000 people in remote communities with cleaner energy, safer water and stronger healthcare.

Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Max Willis, said; “When health workers have reliable power and safe water, communities are healthier and more resilient. Australia is proud to be working with Respond Global and the Government of Vanuatu to deliver clean, reliable energy where it’s needed most. With HELPR-1 at its halfway point, we are seeing the impact multiply across the islands, transforming healthcare for tens of thousands of people across Vanuatu.”

Dr Ian Norton, Managing Director, Respond Global, said: “We thank Australia for their support for this impactful project, and for the partnership of the Ministry of Health and Department of Energy. We believe everyone deserves access to health services even in remote and hard to reach islands. This project means those services now have power, clean water, and thanks to the Australian Government, extra medical equipment and supplies delivered as part of this REnew Pacific project.”

REnew Pacific is part of the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative focused on climate infrastructure in the region, delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP).

Across the Pacific and Timor-Leste, communities are showing that clean energy solutions last longest when they are locally led. That’s why partnerships across the Pacific and Timor-Leste are investing in community governance and women’s leadership as much as technology. Supported by the Australian Government, these initiatives are putting decision-making in the hands of communities to ensure renewable energy works for everyone over the long term.

As we continue our countdown to #COP30, we’re highlighting projects supported by the Australian Government through REnew Pacific and its earlier pilots under the Business Partnerships Platform’s Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnerships. This week we’re shining a solar/hydro-powered light on some of the pilot partnerships where community committees, women’s groups and local organisations are powering the clean energy shift from the ground up.

In Vanuatu, women in the remote village of Lawital on Tanna Island have led the charge to bring clean, reliable solar power to every home. More than 800 people across 115 households are now benefitting from solar lighting and charging systems, five community centres have been powered, and 10 public spaces are lit with solar streetlights. Through training and leadership by the Women I TokTok Tugeta (WITTT) Network, local women are installing and maintaining the systems, supported by ActionAid Vanuatu, PowerWells and the Australian Government. With a PayGo model reinvesting community payments into maintenance, new systems and livelihood opportunities, the women of Lawital are building energy access that is inclusive, sustainable and community-owned. Find out more here and see why it’s important below:

In Kiribati, Action on Poverty and local partner FSPK are bringing solar-powered water and energy to Aranuka Island, supported by the Australian Government. The project tackles two urgent needs – clean water and reliable electricity – while also creating leadership opportunities for women. Infrastructure management committees, now majority women-led, oversee solar assets, collect levies and receive training in governance and financial literacy. These committees are leadership incubators, proving that energy access is also a pathway to empowerment. Find out more here.

In Solomon Islands, the Vavanga community is partnering with Pelena and the Australian Government to expand a micro-hydro system the community has managed for over 30 years. By upgrading the old reticulation network, the project will deliver reliable, affordable energy to all 116 households, unlocking opportunities for businesses and livelihoods. Local governance is central: the Vavanga Community Hydro Committee and the PAVAPO Women’s Group are closely involved in decisions, ensuring the system reflects community priorities while strengthening local leadership structures. Find out more here.

Behind every solar panel and micro-hydro system are the people who make them work and we’re so proud to share these stories. Across the Pacific, these partnerships show that energy solutions work best when they are locally led and community powered. By strengthening governance, championing women’s leadership and supporting local institutions, they are building lasting access to energy and more resilient communities.

These locally-led clean energy partnerships are all part of the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350million initiative for climate infrastructure in the region delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.

Across the Pacific and Timor-Leste, solar power is transforming lives, providing reliable electricity for health centres, schools, water systems and community hubs that people depend on every day.

As we charge ahead with our countdown to #COP30, we’re showcasing projects supported by the Australian Government through REnew Pacific and earlier pilots under the Business Partnerships Platform’s (BPP) Off-Grid Renewable Energy Partnerships. An incredible 94% of these projects are solar, bringing clean, renewable energy to essential services across the region.

In Vanuatu, Respond Global, through its unique HELPR-1 vessel, is powering ahead with one of REnew Pacific’s first projects, installing 20 new off-grid solar power systems and upgrading a further 20 health facilities across all six provinces. With support from Vanuatu’s National Green Energy Fund (NGEF), the project is also supplying medical equipment, repairing and upgrading systems in schools and clinics, removing e-waste and training local community members to maintain the systems. Launched in February, it is already more than halfway through, with five health facilities in Sanma Province electrified last month alone, together serving more than 11,700 people. Find out more here.

Over in Solomon Islands, families across Guadalcanal now have reliable, solar-powered healthcare they can count on, day and night at the Good Samaritan Hospital. A BPP partnership between Superfly and the hospital, completed late last year, has created a cleaner, more resilient system that now supplies 97.3% of the hospital’s energy needs. Hundreds of patients now treated safely at night, while savings from reduced diesel use – 19,000 litres to date – have been reinvested into new facilities, including a non-communicable disease extension for foot care and a soon-to-open eye clinic. Find out more here.

In Papua New Guinea, more than 300 students, teachers and family members at the remote Kokoda College now benefit from reliable, renewable energy thanks to a solar mini-grid launched in March through a BPP partnership with KTF (Kokoda Track Foundation). The system is powering classrooms, an IT lab with disability assistive technologies, a solar water pump, a waste incinerator and an irrigation system that supports climate-smart agriculture on the campus. Find out more here.

In Fiji, school children on Rabi Island are enjoying more reliable energy and internet access thanks to a solar system and satellite connection installed late last year at Buakonikai Primary School through a BPP partnership with Its Time Foundation. The upgrade is transforming learning outcomes, ensuring students can study with consistent power for lights and computers. Find out more here and check out this short film about its impact.

These sun-powered initiatives are all part of the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350million initiative for climate infrastructure in the region delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.
