The world’s biggest climate summit – the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP31 – opens in Antalya, Türkiye in just ten weeks.
COP31 will bring countries together to strengthen national climate plans, follow through on climate finance commitments and negotiate how to keep global warming in check. This year carries a distinctly Pacific voice: Australia will lead the negotiations, with a pre-COP gathering hosted in Fiji and Tuvalu before nations come together in Antalya.
It’s also our birthday! COP31 marks two years since REnew Pacific launched at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Minister Bowen announced Australia’s $75 million investment to help remote Pacific and Timor-Leste communities move away from fossil fuels, strengthen energy security and deliver climate-resilient development.
We’re celebrating by sharing REnew Pacific’s impact over its first two years. Each week we’ll share a new story from across the program, from powering schools, clinics and clean water to the remarkable journeys of reaching the region’s most remote islands and the women and communities leading the way. Together, these stories show how Australia is bringing clean energy and essential services to some of the region’s most remote communities to power homes, schools, health centres, water, sanitation and so much more.
REnew Pacific is part of the Pacific Climate Infrastructure Financing Partnership (PCIFP), a $350 million initiative for climate infrastructure in the region, delivered by the Australian Government’s Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and implemented by Palladium.
